Four cancer specialists from the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center (UMGCC) participated in a three-day international conference on the prevention and treatment of tobacco-related cancers held March 27-29, 2006, at the N.N. Blokhin Russian Cancer Research Center in Moscow.
The conference focused on tobacco control efforts in Russia and the role of tobacco in various types of cancer, including cancers of the lung, head & neck, esophagus, pancreas, as well as genitourinary and gynecologic cancers.

The meeting was sponsored, in part, by the American Russian Cancer Alliance, of which the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center is a founding member. Mikhail Davydov, M.D., D.Sc., president of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, was co-chair of the conference. Other sponsors include the International Union Against Cancer, the National Cancer Institute, the Blokhin center and the European School of Oncology.
