Application Process
All applicants must be graduates of an approved medical school and have satisfactorily completed one year of approved post-graduate training (PGY-1), prior to entering clinical training in radiation oncology. We accept all applications through ERAS. All positions are offered only through the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP).
The following materials must be submitted through ERAS no later than November 1st:
- ERAS application
- Curriculum vitae (ERAS format is acceptable)
- Personal statement
- Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE) or "Dean's letter"
- Three letters of recommendation, preferably including one or two from academic Radiation Oncologists.
- Medical school transcript
- USMLE Step 1
- USMLE Step 2 (when available)
- Photograph
- Your email address
Residency Interviews
After our selection committee has reviewed your application, you will receive an email or phone call informing you of the status of your application. All interviews are held on Friday and are by invitation only. Interviews last for half of the day. We have found that this format allows for a more organized interview for both you and our faculty and minimizes interruptions.
Interview Dates: First two Fridays in December
Number of PGY-2 vacancies: 2-3 per year

International Medical Graduate
If you are an International Medical Graduate, please note the requirements listed below. Also, please visit our Graduate Medical Education Web site further information about visas.
- Valid ECFMG certificate, including successful completion of the CSA.
- The University of Maryland Medical Center adheres to the standards and guidelines for the employment of non-immigrants as established by federal immigration laws and the U.S. Department of Labor. Non-immigrant alien residents or fellows will be sponsored under the J-1 visa program unless they have graduated from an accredited U.S. medical school. If they have graduated from an accredited U.S. medical school, non-immigrant alien residents and fellows may be eligible for sponsorship under the H-1B visa program.
- Although specific minimum USMLE scores are not required for the residency program, it is highly desirable to have USMLE scores in the upper quartile for all applicants. Applicants with failing USMLE scores will not be granted interviews.
Osteopathic Medical Student
If you are an Osteopathic Medical Student, we require USMLE Step 1 scores to be considered for an interview. USMLE Step 2 scores should be submitted if available.

Scholarship Opportunities
The Department of Radiation Oncology, via an Endowment Fund for Academic Excellence in Radiation Oncology has several scholarship opportunities to be awarded to medical students who attend the University of Maryland School of Medicine The student must demonstrate a strong interest in Radiation Oncology. The scholarship awards for this program are worth up to $2,500. University of Maryland Medical Students who are interested in applying for a scholarship should visit the Office of Student Research Web site for more information.
