Yu, D.Sc., has been named the inaugural Carl M. Mansfield, M.D. Endowed Professor of Radiation Oncology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Dr. Yu is chief of the radiologic physics team in the Department of Radiation Oncology and a researcher at the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center. The endowed professorship pays tribute to the contributions of Dr. Carl Mansfield, former chairman of the Department of Radiation Oncology.
Dr. Yu’s research in developing new techniques for radiation therapy delivery has led to important advances in clinical practice. Radiation therapy innovations such as intensity-modulated arc therapy (IMAT), which he invented in 1995, and Direct Aperture Optimization (DAO), an enhancement of IMRT therapy that he helped develop, have led to significant improvements in the care of patients with cancer.
“I feel that it is an honor to be able to apply physics and technology to relieve people’s suffering,” said Dr. Yu. “I am honored to be associated with Dr. Mansfield’s legacy and challenged to continue the search for practical and cost-effective tools for cancer care.”
At the School of Medicine investiture ceremony held June 25, 2007, Dr. Mansfield’s contributions to the department were recognized. “He was responsible for recruiting nationally recognized leaders in radiation biology and medical physics which helped lay the foundation for the department reaching the level of success that we have achieved today,” said Mohan Suntha, M.D., vice chairman of the Department of Radiation Oncology. "Dr. Mansfield’s mantra was simple yet elegant: to provide top quality clinical care in an environment that fosters intellectual curiosity and provides a platform for education."
The endowed professorship was established in large part through the generosity of Krishnan Suthanthiran, president of Best Medical International. In 2004, Mr. Suthanthiran made a significant commitment to the University of Maryland School of Medicine to establish an endowment in honor of Dr. Carl Mansfield. A large number of alumni, friends, faculty and staff members have also generoulsy supported the creation of the endowment.
