Radiation Oncology Program

Education

Radiation Oncology Residency Program | Dosimetry Training Program

The department has eight radiation oncologists, eight Ph.D. level physicists, and five medical dosimetrists. We have recently installed three new Varian linear accelerators each equipped with portal imaging. One of the new machines is a Varian Trilogy accelerator with radiosurgery capabilities and cone beam CT. We also have a Gamma Knife and have an active brachytherapy program.

Radiation Oncology Residency Program

The Radiation Oncology Residency Program is a four-year training program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). We expect and require the highest levels of personal commitment, integrity, professionalism, compassion, and patient care in our department from every member of the staff, including trainees. We are proud of our long tradition of excellence, and are pleased you have expressed interest in our program. At present, we are accredited for 8 resident positions.

Calculating the dose of each radiation treatment is the job of the medical dosimetrist. These specially-trained professionals are involved in treatment planning, dose measurement, dose calculations and quality assurance for radiotherapy treatments designed to treat cancer. The medical dosimetrist is an integral member of the treatment team, which includes radiation oncologists, medical physicists, radiation therapists and nurses.

The University of Maryland Medical Center School of Medical Dosimetry is a one year, certificate program Accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT).
