More than 400 cancer patients and their family members joined cancer center staff for a celebration at the annual cancer survivor's day event at the Hippodrome Theatre on Sunday, June 27, 2010. This year's theme was "Survivors’ Celebration Luau."
Guests were encouraged to wear island attire and were greeted at the door with flower leis by cancer center staff. Hawaiian-inspired food, a DJ, limbo contests, line dancing, telescope pictures, and sand art were just a few of the afternoon’s activities.
The event opened with an authentic hula performance, followed by a short program led by cancer center director, Kevin J. Cullen, M.D.
Arif Hussain, M.D., a medical oncologist and expert in genitourinary cancer, spoke to the audience about recent advances in treatment and the importance of clinical trials in developing new therapies and advancing our understanding of cancer.
Rhonda Silva, M.B.A., B.S.N., R.N., provided an overview of the Baltimore City Cancer Program, a community-based outreach initiative of the cancer center that focuses on education screening for underserved people in Baltimore City.
Thanks to everyone who attended this inspirational event in celebration of National Cancer Survivor's Day!
