Cancer Survivors Celebrate the Magic of Life

Over 400 cancer survivors, family members, doctors, nurses and staff turned out for the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center's (UMGCC) 2008 Cancer Survivors Celebration, The Magic of Life, held on June 8, 2008.

The historic Hippodrome Theatre was the backdrop for an afternoon of laughter, celebration and sharing as survivors and their families were treated to lunch along with entertainment, moving testimonials by several survivors, and inspiring remarks by cancer center staff.

One survivor's family member summed up the day in a thank you e-mail to UMGCC:

I just wanted to thank you for the wonderful time my family had on Sunday, June 8, 2008. The Magic of Life held at the Hippodrome Theater was an experience like no other. My father is a cancer survivor. My dad was excited to afford his two grandchildren an afternoon of family fun. Every person (and plant!) we came in contact with was friendly and made our time memorable. The menu selection was perfect for young and young at heart.

We were inspired and encouraged by the testimonials given to the group and shared at our table. It was refreshing to see the doctors and nurses "just hanging out!" The face painters, caricature artists, balloon artists, strolling characters, DJ, magician, beverage and food service attendees and other hospitality staff were beyond professional. They conducted themselves with excellence, compassion and warmth. The location was beautiful and the inclusion of free parking was a pleasant touch. Kudos to the organizers and staff attendees.
