University of Maryland Greenebaum Cancer Center oncology nurse coordinator Arlene Davis, B.S.N., R.N., O.C.N., was recently honored by the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults with the 2014 Hope Award.

The award recognizes oncology professionals in the medical, psycho-social and advocacy fields who demonstrate a passion for creatively addressing the emotional and health care needs of young adult patients and survivors. The award was presented at the Ulman Cancer Fund’s 2014 Blue Jeans & Bowties Ball, held on Saturday, January 25, 2014.

Arlene has worked as a registered nurse for 40 years, including 26 years of inpatient nursing. She joined the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center in 2007, where she serves as an oncology nurse coordinator in the Roslyn and Leonard Stoler Pavilion for outpatient cancer care.

Arlene works closely with UMGCC’s Young Adult Patient Navigator, Elizabeth Saylor, thanks to a partnership with the Ulman Cancer Fund. The relationship allows Arlene to provide special attention and support for her young adult patients.

“I believe that all patients with cancer need an incredible level of support, and young adults especially face unique challenges during this time,” she says.  “I make an effort to involve Elizabeth as early possible in the care of our young adult patients, who find that they have a strong advocate at UMGCC to help them get through the most challenging time of their lives. I am honored that my patients allow me into their lives during their journey with cancer.”
