Cancer Research Awareness Month

In 2007, the U.S. Congress designated May as National Cancer Research Month. At the University of Maryland Greenebaum Cancer Center, we are joining the American Association for Cancer Research's national campaign to raise awareness of the importance of cancer research and highlight the progress that research institutions are making in critical areas of research and patient care.

The University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center is an NCI-designated cancer center dedicated to the prevention, treatment, and cure of cancer. Our physicians and scientists conduct cutting-edge research to bring the latest advances in cancer treatment directly to our patients. Here are a few highlights of the many research efforts underway at the Greenebaum Cancer Center to advance the critical areas of cancer research and patient care:

Dr. Angela H. Brodie's groundbreaking discovery of aromatase inhibitors, a new class of drugs for treating women with breast cancer, now used world-wide

Dr. Scott Strome's development of "Trojan peptice" vaccines to treat advanced head and neck cancer

Dr. H. Richard Alexander's experimental procedure, Percutaneous Hepatic Perfusion (PHP) to treat patients with melanoma that has spread to the liver

Research collaboration between our cancer center's physician-scientists and the Univeristy of Maryland Stem Cell Research Center, led by Dr. Curt Civin; the University of Maryland Institute for Human Virology, led by Dr. Robert Gallo; and the Univeristy of Maryland Institute for Genome Sciences, led by Dr. Claire Fraser-Liggett

More than 125 active clinical trials offering patients promising therapies, often years before they are commercially available
Active translational research program, designed to bring scientific discoveries rapidly from the laboratory to the patient's bedside
State-of-the-art laboratories, where our researchers are developing cancer vaccines, novel cancer-fighting agents and new combination therapies
