University of Maryland Oncology Associates offers a unique approach to the treatment of cancer.
We participate as part of a multidisciplinary team, working together to craft a treatment plan best suited to the individual patient. We work daily with surgical oncology, a leading breast specialist, urologic oncology, and thoracic surgery. Together, we are your portal of entry to the best cancer care available.
Most of this care can be provided right here in our community. If necessary, we can refer our patients to leading specialists at UMGCC's downtown campus, in a streamlined fashion with a minimum of hassle.
Our practice offers patients with all types and stages of cancer access to state-of-the-art cancer care. Our services include:
Our physicians work closely with cancer experts at UMGCC's downtown Baltimore campus. Using the latest teleconferencing technology, our physicians review patient cases weekly with UMGCC oncology specialists to evaluate and consider all treatment options available here as well as at UMGCC. In this way, we offer patients the best, most comprehensive cancer care possible.
"Until recently, cancer treatment has focused primarily on killing rapidly dividing cells. . . Unfortunately, some of our normal cells divide rapidly too, causing multiple side effects. Targeted therapy is about identifying other features of cancer cells. . . This information is used to create a targeted therapy to attack the cancer cells without damaging the normal cells, thus leading to fewer side effects." Dr. Harvinder Singh (Targeted Therapy; Trials Offer Hope, Maryland Gazette, March 5, 2008)
Clinical trials are studies designed to find new and better ways to treat patients with cancer. Through clinical trials, scientists and physicians at the UMGCC are breaking new ground in the development of cancer treatments.
Access to clinical trials is an important advantage of receiving your treatment at University of Maryland Oncology Associates. We offer patients access to many of the 125 clinical trials currently being conducted at UMGCC. In this way, our patients may be eligible for new treatments not yet commercially available elsewhere. Our staff research associate coordinates clinical trial participation for those patients who are interested.
We also offer a variety of support services, such as genetic counseling, to help patients through their cancer care. Genetic counseling consultations are provided free of charge.
Our nurses are highly skilled at the technical aspects of treatment.
Our family of physicians and nurses are dedicated to providing unparalleled service to our patients. We know how important it is to you to be able to reach your health care team quickly and without hassles. Our physicians are available at any hour of the day or night. If you call after office hours, the operator will often connect you directly to the doctor’s cell phone.
Our nurses are highly skilled at the technical aspects of treatment. What distinguishes them, however, is their openness, accessibility and compassion. Patients spend an enormous amount of their treatment time with the nursing staff. Receiving therapy in a pleasant environment with caring, compassionate health professionals is key to navigating this passage.
Our experienced medical oncologists provide patient consultations, treatment and follow-up care for cancer. They work closely with other oncology specialists at the main UMGCC campus in Baltimore, and are on the faculty of the University of Maryland School of Medicine.
