Spiritual Baltimore
Baltimore has deep and varied religious traditions. It is home to the oldest
Catholic cathedral in the United States, the
Baltimore Basilica.
- The historic First Unitarian
Church is the site of William Ellery Channing's famous sermon defining
the Unitarian religion.
- Northwest Baltimore is the site of several thriving predominantly Jewish
neighborhoods.
- The Lovely Lane United Methodist Church,
the Mother Church of American Methodism, is located in Baltimore just north
of downtown.
- St.
Francis Xavier Church was the first African American Catholic community
in the United States.
- St
Luke's Episcopal church was established in 1857 and still operates in
its original Gothic Revival structure, registered with the National Register
of Historic Places.
Numerous other churches, synagogues, mosques and other places of worship offer
spiritual guidance and community.
