Hematologic Malignancies Program

Experts Present Findings at Annual ASH Conference

UMGCC Hematologic Malignancies Program member participation in the 2008 American Society of Hematology Annual Meeting, December 6-9, 2008, San Francisco 

Dr. Yin Wu, second-year Hematology/Oncology fellow mentored by Dr. Ashraf Badros, presented “Outcome of African-American multiple myeloma patients after autologous stem cell transplantation: A single-center experience.”

Dr. Yingqiu Xie, postdoctoral fellow in Dr. Maria Baer’s laboratory, presented “PKC412 directly inhibits the serine/threonine protein kinase pim-1 in cell lines and acute myeloid leukemia cells as a novel mechanism of inhibition of multidrug resistance.”

Dr. Feyruz Rassool presented “Inhibiting alternative non-homologous enjoining (NHEJ) pathways: Therapeutic targets in chronic myeloid leukemia.”

Dr. Ashraf Badros, Dr. Maria Baer and Dr. Ivana Gojo were co-investigators and co-authors of presentations of clinical trials results. Dr. Badros: “Vorinostat plus bortezomib for the treatment of relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma: Early clinical experience,” “Phase II trial of combination of bortezomib and rituximab in Relapsed and/or refractory Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia,” and “A phase 1 trial of SNS-032, a potent and specific CDK 2, 7 and 9 inhibitor, in chronic lymphocytic leukemia and multiple myeloma.” Dr. Baer: “Iron chelation with deferasirox (Exjade) improves iron burden in patients with myelodysplastic syndromes,” and “Phase II trial of low dose, subcutaneous decitabine in myelofibrosis.” Dr. Gojo: “Minimizing therapy for patients with acute promyelocytic leukemia: Efficacy of single cycle of arsenic-based consolidation therapy,” and “Phase I study of vorinostat in combination with decitabine in patients with relapsed or newly diagnosed acute myelogenous leukemia or myelodysplastic syndrome.”

Dr. Ashraf Badros gave a presentation entitled “B-cell neoplasms“in a Satellite Symposium entitled “The Hematology Circle: Optimizing Epigenetic Therapy to Improve Outcomes” and Dr. Maria Baer gave a presentation entitled “Have new agents for MDS made a difference?“ in a Satellite Symposium entitled “Treating AML/MDS in the Elderly: New Solutions for a Long-standing Problem.”

Dr. Ann Zimrin gave a presentation entitled “Measuring Outcomes” in the Hematology/Oncology Training Program Directors’ Workshop.

Dr. Aaron Rapoport and Dr. Douglas Ross served as abstract reviewers and chaired scientific sessions.
