Cancer of the endometrium, a common cancer in women, is a disease in which cancerous cells develop in the endometrial lining of the uterus.
There are several types of endometrial cancer, but most occur in the glandular cells of the endometrium and are called adenocarcinomas. Cancer of the endometrium is different from cancer of the muscle of the uterus (sarcoma of the uterus).
The American Cancer Society estimates there will be 40,100 new cases of cancer of the uterine corpus diagnosed in the United States in 2008. Most of these cancers will occur in the endometrium. The American Cancer Society also estimates that about 7,470 women in the United States will die from cancers of the uterine body in 2008.
