Blood and Marrow Transpant
Our Transplant Team
A hematology/oncology physician specially trained in bone marrow and peripheral blood stem cell transplant will provide your primary medical care and will see you daily while you are in the hospital. He or she will order tests, treatments and medication and inform you and your family of your progress.
Fellow
A Fellow is a physician who is board-certified in internal medicine, working toward specialty certification in oncology and/or hematology.
Resident
A Resident is a physician in training, seeking special training in cancer medicine, who works closely with the attending physician to provide your care.
Transplant Coordinators
These registered nurses manage all the arrangements for your transplant. These may include: evaluating your insurance and advocating for coverage, coordinating pre-transplant tests, providing education, and participating with other team members in decisions about your care plan. Your transplant coordinator is the primary point of contact to the Transplant Center. She or he will lead you and your family on a tour of the cancer center and transplant unit, and help with any questions or concerns that may arise throughout the transplant process.
Nurse Practitioner
This highly skilled individual has special training in cancer medicine and works closely with the attending physician. She or he is qualified to take medical care of patients.
Registered Nurse
A primary nurse will care for you during your hospital stay. She or he plans your overall nursing care and works with the inpatient doctors.
Nurse Extenders
Sophisticated nursing assistants help your primary nurse care for you during your hospital stay.
Cell Component Specialist
These medical technicians are responsible for collecting and processing bone marrow and blood stem cells taken from your donor's blood. Using highly-specialized laboratory techniques, they prepare the bone marrow or peripheral blood stem cell product that will be used in your transplant.
Social Worker
This team member meets with you and your family during the pre-transplant evaluation. Your social worker provides links to important services -- including financial assistance, disability insurance, housing, transportation, and support groups -- and helps coordinate your transition from the hospital to home. She or he also provides the emotional support and counseling that many families find invaluable in dealing with the stress of illness and treatment.
Nutritionist
The nutritionist will meet with you before you enter the hospital to check your food intake and to create a nutritional care plan. She or he will help you with any dietary needs or problems while in the hospital and after your transplant.
Dental Hygienist
Your dental hygienist will examine your mouth, teeth and gums before your transplant therapy. If problems are found, she or he helps coordinate dental care. Good dental hygiene helps prevent infections that may occur while your body's immune system is recovering.
Dentist
Your dentist diagnoses dental problems and coordinates a comprehensive dental treatment plan while you are in the hospital.
Pharmacist
The pharmacist works closely with the team to prepare and deliver your chemotherapy and any other drug that you will receive during your tranplant. He or she is experienced in dealing with side effects of medications that may arise and can answer your questions in the hospital or after discharge.
Financial Counselor
This team member will assist you with financial matters related to your transplant, particularly with obtaining required preauthorizations.
